Embracing Realistic Changes: A Mom's Guide to Navigating Life Without New Year's Resolutions

Introduction

Entering the new year as a mom to young kids can feel like stepping into uncharted territory. With the chaos, unpredictability, and joy that parenting brings, the idea of setting grandiose New Year's resolutions might seem overwhelming. However, what if we shift our focus from ambitious goals to small, realistic changes that can make a significant impact on our well-being? As therapists who specialize in providing therapy for moms in Hamilton, Ontario and virtually across the province, we are skilled in supporting women who are seeking to find more balance and joy in their lives both inside and outside of motherhood, but realistic ways. In this blog post, we'll offer you some strategies to give you some ideas how to do this in steps that feel manageable.

  1. Embrace Uncertainty:

New and experienced moms alike often find themselves navigating through a whirlwind of uncertainty. Instead of getting caught up in the pressure of setting resolutions, acknowledge the unpredictability of parenthood. Accepting that some days with feel chaotic and understanding that not every day will go as planned can be a liberating mindset. At the same time, some days are also going to go incredibly well - beyond what you expected and those days are especially important to celebrate.

  2. Prioritize Self-Compassion:

In the quest for perfection, it's easy for moms to neglect self-compassion which is treating ourselves with the same love and kindness we offer our children, partners, and dear friends. Understand that it's okay not to have it all figured out. Be kind to yourself, celebrate the small victories, and recognize that imperfections are a part of the beautiful journey of motherhood. Want to get started? Check out the work of Kristen Neff whose life’s work is all about self-compassion and making it accessible.

  3. Small, Attainable Changes:

Rather than setting lofty resolutions, focus on making small, achievable changes. Whether it's incorporating short mindfulness exercises into your routine, finding moments for self-reflection, or establishing a simple daily self-care ritual, these small steps can contribute to a positive mindset. Choose something easy and that you will enjoy doing. My goal for this year is to be more consistent (note not perfect) getting outside in the morning light for a short walk which research shows enhances mood, reduces symptoms of depression, boost performance, focus, and assists with healthy sleep patterns.

  4. Connect with Fellow Moms:

The journey of motherhood is shared by many, and connecting with other moms whether these are existing friends or making new ones can provide a sense of support and understanding. Share experiences, swap tips, and lean on each other for encouragement. Building a supportive community can make the challenges more manageable.

  5. Prioritize Self-Care:

I know I know, you’re tired of hearing about self-care. But self-care doesn't have to be elaborate; it can be as simple as taking a few minutes for yourself each day. Whether it's enjoying a quiet cup of tea, taking a short walk, or indulging in a favourite book, these moments of self-care can contribute to a more balanced and fulfilled life.

Conclusion

As a new mom or mom to young kids, navigating the uncertainties of parenthood is an ongoing journey. Instead of being weighed down by New Year's resolutions, focus on embracing the chaos, practicing self-compassion, and making small, realistic changes. Remember, it's the small steps that lead to lasting and meaningful transformations on your journey through motherhood.
