We’re doing something a little different this week on the blog - featuring an interview with Registered Holistic Nutritionist Jacqueline Cope who is local to our Hamilton community. In this blog article, I have asked a series of questions of Jacqueline to help us better understand the mind-body connection between nutrition and emotional wellbeing. We hope this blog gives you useful tips, support, and permission (not that you need it) to start prioritizing your wellbeing and selfcare again.

Jacqueline is a dedicated nutritionist specializing in women’s health. Her journey into the field was inspired by her personal journey through motherhood and overcoming burnout. Jacqueline understands the challenges women face and is passionate about helping them prioritize their own well-being. At Jacqueline Cope Wellness, she offers a compassionate and holistic approach to nutrition, focusing on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes. Why did you decide to specialize in women’s health? What’s your favourite part about your role?

I decided to specialize in women’s health after giving birth to my daughter. I experienced burnout, hormonal imbalances, while constantly putting everyone else first. I knew I needed to make a change and rewrite my story so I could be the best version of myself for both me and my family. My favourite part of my role is being able to transform women's lives, helping them realize that they are more than enough and deserve to be celebrated!


What type of goals do you support clients with? How does your practice differ from another?

I support women in putting themselves first by helping them improve their overall nutrition, manage weight, and balance hormones. I assist with managing health conditions like diabetes and PCOS, boosting energy levels, and developing healthy eating habits for families. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of stress management and self-care practices to enhance their well-being. My practice is different because I have been through it all and can empathize deeply with my clients. I've tried every diet, fad, and quick fix, and I understand the struggles firsthand. My approach is loving and gentle, focusing on creating a sustainable lifestyle rather than a restrictive diet. I want you to enjoy delicious food and share your non-negotiables so we can work around them. You only have one life—let’s make it fun and fulfilling!

How has your motherhood journey impacted your professional practice?

Motherhood has taught me so many things. It has forced me to think about what really matters in life. What are my non-negotiables to make me feel like myself outside of being a mom. Being a mother has deepened my appreciation for the importance of self-care and holistic well-being. I understand firsthand the significance of prioritizing nutrition, exercise, stress management, and self-care practices to maintain physical, mental, and emotional health. This perspective informs my approach to nutrition counseling, as I strive to empower my clients to prioritize their own well-being amidst the demands of motherhood and everyday life.


How would someone know that they should book an appointment with you? What would you say to someone who is hesitant but struggling with their nutrition and wellbeing?

If someone is feeling not like their best selves, constantly bloated, tired no matter how much sleep they got, or even sluggish throughout the day. There are so many times that people are ok with feeling ok and assume that’s just the way it is and it's the process of life. I couldn’t disagree more and it shouldn't be normalized. We shouldn't always be tired, or moody, or bloated after a meal. My role is to provide a safe space where they can share their challenges and goals without judgment. Together, we can explore their concerns, identify areas for improvement, and create practical strategies that align with their lifestyle and preferences. I'm here to offer guidance, encouragement, and support every step of the way, helping them to feel empowered and confident in their journey towards better health and well-being.


What are some immediate tools or steps a woman could start today if she wanted to work on her nutrition?

Immediate tools or steps that a woman can take is to assess what they are eating in a day and what their eating habits are. It is a great time to reflect and it provides valuable insights into where to focus your efforts. Maybe you didn’t realize that you tend to eat on the go or you are drinking pop a few times a day. I would also try to stock up your kitchen with healthy and whole foods. Having these foods readily available makes it easier to make healthy choices.


Are there any specific mantras or positive statements you’d like to share for a woman who knows she wants to make a change in nutrition/health but is struggling to start or stay motivated?

I would say that it is completely ok to fail at something! Stop beating yourself up and start being gentle. Maybe it didn’t work out for you because it wasn’t the right foods, or the right exercise for you. For example, If you told me in order to lose weight, I have to go on the bike 5 days a week. I would fail miserably. WHY? Because I don’t like the bike at all and I would give up very quickly and not be motivated. What do I do instead? I listen to myself and find out exercises that I LIKE. Same with nutrition. Try out 1 healthy food that you like and start incorporating it into your meals instead of taking something out. Remember, this is a lifestyle, not a strict diet.


If a woman felt overwhelmed even thinking about prioritizing herself, what would you say?

If a woman feels overwhelmed even thinking about prioritizing herself, I would gently reassure her that care of herself is a vital act of self love for both her and her family. I would say to make a list. Write down what your ideal day would look like? What makes you happy? Slowly incorporate it and make the steps small so it is attainable. Something even like, waking up 5 minutes earlier to drink a glass of water, or playing music while doing your skin care routine. Do it until it becomes a routine and then add on to that! These small, manageable steps can make a big difference. As my mom would always say.. “Baby steps”.


What is your favourite form of self-care? How do you manage to prioritize yourself as a mom?

As a mom, my morning and night self-care routine is crucial for prioritizing myself, feeling grounded, and starting and ending the day in a space where I can truly be myself. This allows me to take my time and be in complete control, as my daughter is asleep, and I can focus on getting into a great mindset. I always start my morning with a large warm glass of lemon water and a pinch of Himalayan salt, which provides hydration, added electrolytes, and wakes up my body for the day. In the evening, I dim the lights at sundown to set my body into nighttime mode, helping to increase melatonin production, which is essential for regulating sleep. I end the night with my skincare routine that I am obsessed with, complete with a bathroom calendar to remind me which products to use.
